History of Mayfield Medical Connection

Positioned on Hanbury Street, across from Mayfield Diggers, the surgery has been operating over 70 years since 1938 and is now under the ownership of local residents Chris and Kath Teagle.

Following a carefully planned expansion and growth of the practice to restore it to its former glory Mayfield Medical Connection has increased the number of doctors and services in the surgery and can now also offer medical services to local industry, such as pre-employment checks and drug and hazardous substance testing as well as holistic healthcare and complementary therapies.

When Kath and Chris took over the surgery their mission was to rebuild essential doctor services as well as add an holistic approach.

It was Kath’s personal experiences of the powerful results when high quality traditional medicine was combined with natural therapies such as nutrition, herbal medicine and other complementary strategies that inspired her to open Newcastle’s first Holistic Health and Medical Centre.

Kath saw firsthand how her loved ones benefited when the best in orthodox medicine and complementary strategies worked together with her mum who suffered from a relatively rare autoimmune disorder and a partner diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Then in her job as a teacher with developmentally delayed kids she saw how those who could afford to travel the big distances and seek Integrative Doctors experienced significantly greater improvements than the kids who couldn’t.

It was these experiences that led her to create a practice that offers the very best medical attention with straight GPs as well as Integrative GPs who not only practice medicine but can also offer acupuncture, herbalism or reiki.  In addition to the complementary therapies of psychologists, dieticians and naturopaths with the convenience of the in-house pathology services of Australian Clinical Laboratories.

Kath says “Despite introducing new practitioners, we have maintained the friendly feel of the practice.  Our team on the front desk know most of our patients by name and also know their families and their ups and downs. We are privileged to work in a tight knit community and will always offer a personal touch and genuine welcome to our patients.”

Recently the surgery had a ‘birthday’ with purpose built surgeries and treatment rooms allowing us to service more of our community and invite more allied health professionals to share our space extending our current internal referral system.  To free up Practice staff to offer more of their old fashioned friendly service the surgery has added a new time saving computerised patient record and billing system.
